Retired and fancy playing some golf?
Then the Elderly Gentlemens' Golf Sessions (EGGS) at Ben Rhydding might just be the ticket for you. Though ‘elderly’ by name we are, at heart, a youthful, energetic and especially welcoming bunch of fellas. And as you might expect from ‘gentlemen’ we play with humour and civility though perhaps only a few of us might be considered particularly gallant or refined.
Whatever your handicap you will be welcome. We are a group of varying golfing abilities but eager with anticipation each time we tee off. Just occasionally we hit a drive that sails away, scrape a par with a putt from nowhere or find that golfing side of us we always knew was there. And so we come back for more. Should you need a handicap there’s a simple way of acquiring one over six rounds of 9 holes.
Our group is thriving. We meet twice a week to test our competitive nature, catch up with what’s been happening, pick up some tips as to how to get out of those bunkers, and when the golf is poor there are the stunning views of the Wharfe valley and Cow and Calf rocks to savour.
We meet at Ben Rhydding golf club:
- each Tuesday (tee off 12.45 p.m.) with golf of a very social nature and
- each Thursday (tee off 8.45 a.m.) with individual and team competitions, followed by coffee and the most generous biscuit barrel you are ever likely to encounter.
We also organise regular monthly golfing events at other clubs around Yorkshire with often a pre-game bacon butty setting us up nicely for a cracking days golf. Then there are those social occasions where we can share experiences and tell tales of what might have been had the ball not bounced into the lake. And lest we forget any of the details, competition winners, celebrations or tall stories, they are all expanded with a flourish in the Ben Rhydding Eggsaminer, a magazine published specifically for the section.
Should you hanker after some friendly and competitive golf, then come along or contact Chuck Butler (01274 416961) or Steve Mowat (01943 600423) for more details. You will be most welcome.
